Dr. Gamal Shiha presents the Egyptian Liver Foundation Experience in front of 10,000 doctors

The European Liver Patients’ Association commends the Egyptian Liver Foundation

Dr. Gamal Shiha, chairman of the board of directors of the Egyptian Liver Foundation and member of the board of directors of the European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA), presented the experience of the Egyptian Liver Foundation regarding the project of 100 villages free of hepatitis B and C, at the conference of the European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA) held in Vienna this week.

At the conference, attended by more than ten thousand doctors from European countries, Dr. Gamal Shiha presented the results of the work carried out in relation to the project "73 Egyptian villages in 7 governorates free of viral hepatitis" underlining that the experience represents a model of success that could be applied in countries still suffering from viral hepatitis.

He stressed the need for solidarity between Arab, African and European countries through the exchange of experiences and data to fight this disease in order to eradicate it, as it destroys human health. He also called on the World Health Organization and developed countries to help developing countries eradicate this deadly disease, as in the case of HIV / AIDS.

Dr. Gamal spoke about the Egyptian Liver Foundation's study of 2,287 liver patients, the results of which are consistent with many research studies around the world, confirming that antiviral drugs reduce the risk of liver cancer.

Dr. Shiha said the results showed that anti-viral drugs played an important role in reducing the risk of liver cancer in patients with chronic hepatitis C and patients with advanced cirrhosis and that Hepatitis C protected patients with fibrosis against liver cancer.

The session was chaired by the Swiss Professor, Francisco Negro, who praised the experience presented by Dr. Gamal Shiha, confirming that the Foundation had made great efforts to combat this epidemic.
